Robert T. Scott Sr., 84, of Duluth and the Iron Range, died surrounded by family on Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, at the Benedictine Heath Care Center.
Bob was born in Duluth on Feb. 18, 1927, to Fred G. and Alice I (Shean) Scott. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater. Bob returned from the war and was a 1947 Denfeld High School graduate, Class of Champions.
He went on to graduate from the Duluth Junior College. On Sept. 22, 1951, he married Patricia Spehar and together they raised five children. With Bob's vast talents, many interests and passions, he impacted many areas across Duluth and the Iron Range. He had a love for politics and was one of the first members of the Hoyt Lakes City Council. He was employed for several years in the Accounting Department of Erie Mining. While in Duluth, Bob worked with a local planning and architecture firm until moving to Chisholm where he was the founding executive director of Ironworld. He completed his career as executive director for the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame. Bob was very generous with his time serving numerous non-profit organizations.
Upon his retirement, he and Patricia made their home on Whiteface, which had been the family cabin for more than 50 years.
Bob served as Chairman of the Great Lakes Commission; was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the West Duluth American Legion.
Bob was a devout Catholic and was most recently a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church.
He had a passion for sports with a fierce competitive nature. Above all else, Bob was devoted to his family. He had a deep love for his grandchildren and took great interest in all aspects of their lives.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 59 years, Patricia; children, John (Peggy) Scott of Duluth, Mary Jo (John) Nickila and Tim (Sandi), all of Chisholm, Theresa (Mike) Kucera of Duluth and Patrick (Melissa) Scott of Buffalo, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two siblings, Alice Jappe and Charles Scott, both of Duluth; brothers-in-law, Gerald (Kathy), Richard and Mike (Judy) Spehar; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Neil Scott; and two sisters, Evelyn Stewart and MaryBeth Hamilton.
Visitation 5-7 p.m. Sunday in Bell Brothers Chapel and will continue from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial Monday in St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 2410 Morris Thomas Road, Duluth, with the Rev. William Fider and the Rev. Charles Flynn as concelebrants. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.
