Sixth child of Aaron and Nancy Angaline (Luker) Newman. Siblings: Thomas S, Mary J., Nancy, James W., Bert H., Samuel 'Frank', Belle, Elsie, Harry and Hazel Newman. Her father and most siblings all died before the age of 30 due to 'consumption', 'lung trouble' or tuberculosis. Her mother and sister, Mary Jane were the only ones to survive.
