In the 1870 U.S. Census, Col. Wood was a hotel keeper and in 1880 he was a retired hotel keeper. He conducted the old Hale House, which stood on the site of the present Ruffner Hotel, and also the St. Albert Hotel, prior to the building of the railroad. The Ruffner Hotel was built in 1885 at the northwest corner of Hale and Kanawha Streets after the Hale House burned.
