Alzheimer's won another lengthy battle with a tough old steel magnolia early Thursday morning. Annie LeClerc Sanchez Atkinson left her home in Gulf Breeze early Thursday morning and returned in spirit to the old Sanchez home on Sanders Beach.

Waiting to greet her were her parents, Phil and Sabra Sanchez; her three sisters, Sabra, Pinky and Dolores; her brother, Philip Joe; and her son, Flip, all of whom passed away before her.

So today Annie is back living in her first heaven, the one where she grew up learning family values passed down for centuries and developing a concrete faith that prepared her for the life she dreamed of as a small girl; a happy marriage, raising children and rocking grandchildren. This she did and now she and her brothers and sisters are young again, singing around the old piano that came into the family in the late eighteen hundreds.

She found the love of her life in the form of a tall Navy pilot called Tex. Together they raised six children and enjoyed more than thirty grandchildren. During seven years in the fifties Tex made five carrier tours, including two Korean combat tours, while Annie gave birth to six children.

The children grew up to be healthy teenagers ready to jump into the middle of the turmoil of the Sixties. But their mother had different ideas. She was active in work at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and PTA. By forming a coalition of these groups she put together a group of young people of all races and nationalities from schools all over Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. In direct response to a divided society, she wrote a musical history of our nation called "Pride In." It was produced and enjoyed several large turn out performances at the old Civic Center on South Palafox.

In addition to her own six children there were many others who called Annie "Mao," who say that Mao saved them from a tragic life of alcohol, drugs, and worse. By simply spending a lot of one on one time with them and implanting thoughts and values that started them on the road to a happy life.

So Annie is now with her family, her Blessed Mary, her son, and the God who watches over us all. This is the heaven she always envisioned, her own private heaven, surrounded by those she loves and who love her. For Annie LeClerc Sanchez Atkinson, all is right with the world.

She is survived by her three sisters, Molly Hegman, Terry Lupton and Cathy Bickerstaff; her sons, Tiger, Mike and Greg; her two daughters, Annie and Ducky; her husband, Tex; and thirty plus grandchildren.

A Rosary and a visitation for family and friends will be held for Annie at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Gulf Breeze on Sunday, February 20, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday morning, February 21, 2011 at 11:00 AM.
