January 30 to February 1, 2013
Mrs. Jewel Dean Cassady went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at the age of 96.
Mrs. Cassady lived in the Leakesville, MS, area her entire life.
She will be missed by her family and friends. One of twelve children of George and Florence Hicks, Mrs. Cassady was the last of the Hicks siblings.
Also preceding Mrs. Cassady was her husband, J. D. Cassady in 2004, and her grandson, Michael Thornhill in 2012.
Mrs. Cassady was actively employed as a supervisor for Basila Mfg. in Leakesville for 40+ years and by Lucedale Sportswear for 10+ years, until she retired at age 87.
She was an accomplished seamstress, and she demanded perfection in her creations. Mrs. Cassady was fiercely independent, and her wish was to remain in her own home where she tended to her cows and maintained a small garden. She always insisted on being in her own home "before dark".
Her family is thankful that her wishes were granted.
Mrs. Cassady is survived by her three daughters and their spouses: Marilynn and Arv Lash, of Waxahachie, TX; Patsy and Walter (Dub) Powell of Mobile, AL; and Daphne and Gene Smith of Lafayette, LA. She is also survived by five grandchildren, David Thornhill, Waxahachie, TX; Kelly Qualls, Mobile, AL; Keri Bryant, New Orleans, LA; and Laura Bengal and David Smith, Lafayette, LA; also eight great grandchildren, extended family members, and many friends.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Leakesville for many years. Services for Mrs. Cassady will be conducted at First Baptist Church, Leakesville, MS, on Saturday, February 2, at 2 p.m.
Visitation will be held Friday, February 1, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Freeman Funeral Home in Leakesville.
Interment will be at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Leakesville, MS, in the Hicks Cemetery.
