S Sgt Herman L. Bower was a member of the 460th AAF Bomb Group, Fifteenth Air Force. The 460th flew Consolidated B-24H Liberators and was stationed at Spinazzola, Italy.

Sgt. Bower was killed in action during the bombing raid, involving 35 bombers, on the Wiener Neustadt Nord Airdrome in Austria on April 23, 1944. Sgt. Bower was the radio operator of the B-24 SN 41-29326, piloted by 2nd Lt. George A. Swazey, Jr.
