CHILTON PIONEER WOMAN CALLED
A telegram was received in this city Wednesday morning bringing to W. J. Paulsen and Mrs. A. S. Hipke the sad news of the death of their venerable mother, Mrs. Margaretha Paulsen, which occurred at the home of her son-in-law, Wm Roecker, at Duluth, Minn., on Tuesday night. Mrs. Paulsen while on a visit to her daughter, made a misstep and fell down the stairway just before the holidays and although no bones were broken nor any other visible injury could be found, the shock proved to be too great for a woman of her years and she has failed steadily since the accident which beyond doubt was the indirect cause of her death. The passing of Mrs. Paulsen removes form earth one ot the pioneers of Calumet county.
Margaretha Jensen was born Feb. 10, 1937, at Bergenhusen, Duchy of Schleswig, Germany. She was a daughter of the late H. P. Jensen who was county treasurer to this county in the early days, and came with her parents to America locating in New Holstein, in 1853. On July 29 of the following year she was married to William Paulsen who was strongly identified with its pioneer days as well as during the later period. In the fall of 1858 Mr. Paulsen was elected to the office of Register of Deeds and in January, 1859, they moved to Chilton which had since been their home, uninterruptedly, until the death of Mr. Paulsen, Oct. 1, 1908. Since that time Mrs. Paulsen has made her home with her children. She went to Duluth some two years ago to live with her daughter, Mrs. John Schultheis, but spent part of last summer in this city.
W. J. Paulsen and wife left Wednesday afternoon for Duluth to accompany the remains to this city where they will be buried today, Saturday, from St. Boniface Episcopal church, with internment in the family lot in Breed cemetery.
The deceased is survived by a son, W. J. Paulsen of this city and four daughters, Mrs. Henry Hayssen of Chunchula, Ala., Mmes. Wm Roecker and John Schultheis of Duluth, Minn., and Mrs. A. S. Hipke of this city. She also leaves a brother, Chas Jensen of this city.
