Daughter of Andrew McFadden and Mary North. Andrew was one of the first founders of Mount Vernon, Indiana. Miranda married Edwin Monroe on July 16, 1840, and they settled on a farm in Black Township where they raised a large family of 12 children (8 sons and 4 daughters).

According to Monroe family folklore, Miranda's mother, Mary North, was killed by Indians near the Ohio River, alongside Julia Monroe, the mother of Miranda's future husband Edwin. In that event Miranda was half-scalped but survived, and she bore the scars for the rest of her life.

Some sources (obituary of her daughter Louise, marriage records for sons James and Edwin Jr) state that her maiden name was North, and that her father was one Darius North. This would explain the name of her oldest son. However Miranda and Edwin's marriage license from 1840 states that her maiden name was McFadden.
