John R. Hamilton was the son of James Hamilton and Mary C. (Wheatley) Hamilton. He married Sarah Emily Malissa Stallard on 6 July 1886 in Wise County, Virginia. She was the child of Andrew Jackson Stallard and Margaret Ann (Hillman) Stallard. They had the following children: Lillie Belle; Jemima A.; James Sullivan; Eura; Elexia M. "Lexie"; William H.; and Elsie. John was killed at his home on Indian Creek [in Pound], Wise County, VA by Jim Hensley. The are both buried at Round Top Cemetery, Duncan Gap section in Wise, Wise County, VA.
