Son of Charles William Aycoth and Elizabeth Ann Hill.
Sylvester's surname is spelled AYCOCK on his death certificate, marriage record, cemetery headstone and Civil War records, yet spelled Aycoth in his newspaper obituary and other records. Most of his children spelled it Aycoth.

Sylvester enlisted in Union County, North Carolina on 18 May 1862 at the age of 18. He was wounded in the left thigh at Fredericksburg Virginia on 13 Dec 1862 and returned to duty and was hospitalized in Richmond Virginia on 4 July 1864 with an illness. He returned to duty 12 August 1864 and was paroled at Greensboro on or about 1 May 1865.
