Fred spent his early years on the homestead in South Dakota that his birth Father Carl Benjamin "Ben" Ruby (1877-1910) and his Uncle Richard Frederick "Fred" Ruby (1884-1955) built; On the homestead, the brothers built a one-room sod house for Ben and his Wife Adele (born Schmale) Ruby (1878-1954) and their six children--Fred, Anna, Carl, Paul, Frank, and Bill.
