Harlow was the son of Josiah Purple of Windham County, CT and his wife Hannah Higgens. Harlow's parents came to Otsego county NY in the early 1800s.

8 Mar 1830, Harlow married a local girl, Betsey Walker, and they moved in the early 1830s to McDonough, NY in Chenango County.

There, with Betsey's brother John Walker they built the first Presbyterian Church and established the burial grounds where Harlow was buried in 1840 when he died at the age of 35.

He left behind a young widow and five sons :

1 - Jared Curtis Monson Purple (who married Julia Wentz)

2 - Jasper LeGrand Purple (who married, among others, Hester Wentz, Julia's sister)

3 - Norman Edson Purple

4 - Derrick Laferry Purple (family history says he was lost at sea at 20 years old)

5 - Eugene Galutia Purple
