U.S. Congressman. After attending Moore’s Business University, he taught in the public schools, (1878-79). He then became employed as a traveling salesman in 1880 and was connected with many wholesale business houses at Atlanta, Georgia, before settling in Gainesville, Georgia. There he continued his former pursuits and was clerk of the superior court of Hall County, (1898-1904). In 1905, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-ninth Congress and to the next twelve succeeding Congresses, serving until 1931. After an unsuccessful re-nomination, he returned to previous business pursuits and was a representative of a marble company, until his death at age 80.
