Child: They had a child that died @ birth.

Burial 29 Jun 1954, Tuesday • Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Union Grove, Iredell, North Carolina, USA.

Recollections: I remember Aunt Polly sitting on the front porch of her little house, when the doctor arrived for a home visit. Being young, I was afraid the doctor was hurting my aunt while checking her blood pressure. I recollect becoming upset as I watched helplessly.
And then, there was the time when uncle Wayne, mom's younger brother, told us that aunt Polly had fried an egg on his car just to show how hot it was that day. These are just a few things I remember about my aunt, not very much, yet enough, as I knew she was someone special that deserved our love. Polly died about 6 years before uncle Charlie, and he went on to marry 2 more times.
Note: Uncle Charlie and Aunt Polly moved from a large house in Statesville, North Carolina when he retired from the furniture factory. My grandfather George Bradley Campbell turned his small garage into a dwelling for them. The Browns had a beautiful flower garden in the front yard of their house that always enchanted my child like imagination. I remember the flowers were so large, tall and full. To the side of the yard was a large pecan tree grandfather had planted that made its share of nuts for gleaming. The house was cozy and inviting. It was shot-gun built (the rooms being straight behind each other with middle doors into each section. There were 3 rooms: a living-bed room combination with a few chairs, sideboard, bed and a heating stove; a kitchen with a small wood stove for cooking, sink, few cabinets and a dinning table; at last, a back room which was a place to cure meat. There was a shed porch built across the front of the small cabin-like dwelling. Uncle Charlie would often be found sitting in the front room in his chair, wearing his spectacles while reading or just resting. If my great uncle wanted me to share a meal with him, he would smile and welcome me to come inside, if not he would make a growling sound, and I would get on my bike and make a fast get-a-way. I remember the tableware, wooden handle forks having long prongs. We would have stewed tatters, homemade pan-fried bread, freshly cooked in the black iron skillet and honey for the bread. Uncle Charlie read his mail while eating. The house had a smell of salty curing hams. Grandmother Georgia Campbell would ask Charlie to do the difficult task of taking the anticipated dinner (a chicken) to the chopping block when needed. I have loving and warm memories of my dear uncle. He died in the winter and I remember him lying in repose in the front room of grandma's house, the outside deep in snow. I attended the funeral at the family church. Aunt Helen Day Campbell (Spann) and her family were present and lots of other relatives.
