A funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday, March 27th, 2010 for 80-year-old Rev. Felipe Martinez, CM, who died Wednesday, March 24th, 2010.
He was born September 29th, 1929 in New Orleans, Louisiana, the son of Juan and Juanita (Fernandez) Martinez. They preceded him in death.
He is survived by two sisters: Carmen Moore of Rancho Palos Verdes, California and Marisa Clark of Conway, Arkansas.
Father entered the Vincentian novitiate in Perryville on May 18th, 1948 and pronounced vows two years later. He was ordained a priest on May 29th, 1955.
During his many years as a priest, Father Martinez accepted a variety of assignments. From 1955 through 1965 he taught Latin and English at St. Mary's Seminary in Houston, Texas. From there he moved to St. Vincent de Paul Seminary in Beaumont, Texas where he served for three years followed by two years of study at The Catholic University of American in Washington, DC. He also served at Cardinal Glennon College in St. Louis, Missouri and St. Vincent's College in Cape Girardeau, Missouri as well as St. John's Seminary in Kansas City, Kansas. In 1983, Father Martinez began serving in parishes. His first parish assignment was at Immaculate Conception Church in Poteau, Oklahoma. While that assignment was only for three years, Father Martinez served as pastor of Christ the Savior parish in Brewer, Missouri for twenty years, from 1987 – 2007.
Father spent the last three years of his life at Apostle of Charity residence in Perryville, Missouri.
Father Martinez rested in state at the Church of the Assumption at St. Mary's of the Barrens on Friday, March 26th from 5:00 – 7:30 pm. A Prayer Service was held at 7:30 pm. Visitation continued on Saturday from 10:00 am until the time of Service at 1:00 pm.
Funeral Mass for Father Martinez was held at the Church of the Assumption at St. Mary's of the Barrens on Saturday, March 27th at 1:00 pm. Presiding Celebrant was Father Mark Pranaitis. Burial was in the Vincentian Community Cemetery.
Memorials are preferred to Congregation of the Mission Western Province.
