MURDER-SUICIDE SHOOTINGS KILL FIVE IN BLACKFOOT
Police Find Father Kills Wife, Children

Blackfoot – Five members of a Blackfoot family were found shot to death here Saturday afternoon, and police termed it a murder-suicide case.
Dead are Gary F. Powell, 35; his wife, Verla Ann Powell, 33, and their three children, Lisa, 5, Christina, 3, and Steven, 1. The deaths occurred in a duplex apartment on Northeast Main Street, police said.
Mrs. Powell was a motor route driver for the Idaho State Journal, and her address was 650 Northeast Main.
Police were called at 3:45 p.m. by a neighbor of the Powells. Police said 13 year old Kevin Garidikas, identified as a son of Mrs. Powell, ran from the apartment when the shooting started and notified a neighbor. The Garidikas boy was not injured.
Blackfoot police officers David Leary, Captain Mike Shlosaki and Richard Calvin responded to the call. They found all five persons shot to death with a high-powered rifle. They said the woman and children had been shot in the head, then Powell apparently turned the weapon on himself.
Police and Bingham County Prosecuting Attorney Thomas E. Moss said it appeared to be a case of homicide and suicide. All of the victims were dead at the scene.
Details were sketchy, but it was reported Powell had been employed at some time in the past as an automotive body repairman. He was a native of the Blackfoot area, and had attended Blackfoot schools.
Detective Lt. Larry Hultz said the incident remains under investigation, and an inquest is planned.

MURDER-SUICIDE OF FIVE
INVESTIGATED IN IDAHO

BLACKFOOT, Idaho (UPI)—Police Lt. Larry Hultz said investigation into the apparent murder suicide of a Blackfoot family of five will be completed today and turned over to County Coroner Carl Staley.
Hultz identified the victims as Gary Powell, 36, his wife, Verla Ann, 33, and three children, Lisa, 5, Christina, 3, and Stephen, 1.
Bingham County Prosecuting Attorney Tom Moss said Sunday he plans to hold an inquest into the shooting.
Hultz said they were shot with a high powered rifle by their father, who moments later turned the firearm on himself.
The two girls, Christina and Lisa, were found sprawled in the bathroom of their home in downtown Blackfoot. Gary Powell lay dead in the hall adjacent to the bathroom, clutching the apparent murder weapon.
The mother and baby were found dead of gunshot wounds in the kitchen.
Police were alerted of the incident by a neighbor, Mrs. John Owens.
