Mayor of the City of Toledo, Ohio 1879-1885. He immigrated to the states in 1847 with his parents and settled in New York. Jacob’s father died while he was a young teen and circumstances caused him to be self-supporting at the age of fourteen. He began working on a ship as a cabin-boy and eventually moved to working on trains as a baggage man. Through hard work, he was promoted to conductor and eventually to Depot Master in Toledo, Ohio. The Railway Association nominated him for Alderman in 1874 and he was so successful in the political arena that he served three terms in that capacity. In 1878 Jacob was nominated for mayor of Toledo and won, serving three terms in that position as well, before being nominated to Congress in 1884.
