Wayland was the eldest child of the Reverend Albert M. Billingsley and Eliza Vale Boyd ("Lyde"). He was born while his family were living at Wetmore, Kansas, and then the family moved to Lowellville, Ohio, where his father was a Methodist minister, and Wayland died there. They took his body back "home" to Deersville, where he is buried next to his paternal grandparents - William P. and Leah Randall Billingsley.
