Anderson remembered for his generosity
JACKSON TWP. - William "Bill" V. Anderson combined running a successful business with being very active in the community. Anderson, 77, a longtime resident of Jackson Township, died Friday at Porter Memorial Hospital.
In 1954, Anderson founded Anderson Orchards and operated it for nearly 40 years before selling the business in 1993. He served as Jackson Township Trustee in the 1950s and as a member of the Township Advisory Board. Anderson was a 12-year member of the Duneland School Board and, as school board president, was instrumental in the building of Jackson Elementary.
After he sold the orchard, Anderson tended to his 250 hives throughout Porter and LaPorte counties. "That was his love," his sister Mary Obermeier said. David Lundstrom, who purchased the orchard from Anderson, described his mentor as "a very humble and quiet man ... very special and generous to a fault." He would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. He felt that everything in nature gave him something and he wanted to give something back to everyone and everything." Lundstrom, who visited the orchard as a child, said Anderson taught him to respect nature. Anderson loved the outdoors, especially during wintertime, when he would cross-country ski. Obermeier said her brother opened the orchard to cross country skiing when he owned it - a tradtion Lundstrom has continued.
A 1938 graduate of Jackson Township High School, Anderson was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He earned a bachelor's degree in pomology, the science and practice of growing fruit, from Purdue University in 1949. He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Gideons International.
Anderson is survived by two brothers, Lawrence S. (Jennie) Anderson Jr. of Chesterton, and John A. (Mary) Anderson of Roswell, N.M.; and two sisters, Olga R. (James) Korthals of Jackson Township and Mary R. (Gustav) Obermeier of Jackson Township. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Chesterton with the Rev. C. Christoph Armiger officiating. Interment will take place at Chesterton Cemetery.
