Rev. Asahel J. Cooley, a retired Freewill Baptist clergyman, died at his home in this village
Age 85 years.
Born on Pillar Point, July 6, 1826

For a time a merchant at Carthage and later a farmer. About 50 years ago he became a preacher and occupied pastorates at Ithaca, Snyderville and Stephenton.

Fred H. Cooley of Watertown
James B. Cooley of Bath, N. Y.,
manager of the Western Union Telegraph Co.;
one daughter
Miss Helen Cooley of Dexter
two brothers
Dr. LeRoy C. Cooley of Poughkeepsie
Rufus Cooley of Minneapolis.
nine grandchildren and seven-great grandchildren
His wife died 14 years ago

Rev. Ashel J.'s bio is in the "Free Baptist Cyclopedia, pub. 1889, by Burgess and Ward, and I think is pretty accurate...at least others I've used proved to be accurate. I've also found Rev. Ashel J. and family in the New York censuses. Maybe you can copy and paste bio: Thank you very much. winnie

Born: July 6, 1826, Point Penninsula in Jefferson Co. NY.

He was the son of James and Sally (Clark) COOLEY (from Family Tree).

Rev. Ashel Jervis COOLEY, was married 29 Sept. 1846, to Miss Rachel Leonard., and in January 1865, was baptized, uniting with the Three-Mile Bay church (Freewill Bapt), of which his wife was a member. He was ordained June 7, 1874, by the Jefferson Quarterly Meeting, and was pastor of the Three-Mile Bay church a brief period. He has since served as city missionary at Ithaca, NY, in 1880, and as pastor at Dryden 1881-1883; at Stephentown Center, 1883-85, and for a time at Hadley. He is at present [1889] pstor at Langdon Hill, residing in Elmira."

On 1880 census, children were Helen, Clarence and Willie. He is later living with his daughter, Helen, as a widower. There is another son, Frederick Harold Cooley, b. Aug. 9, 1858, in Jefferson Co, listed in World Tree.
