"My grandmother, Roxie Evelyn Avery , was born in Marshfield, Webster Co., Missouri on August 1, 1887.  She was one of three living children of Tennessee Ellen Edmonds Avery.  In 1897 on September 6 her dad Lewis Avery was killed.  Tennessee Ellen took her family of three children to live with her brother Benjamin Edmonds.  Roxie was attending school in Marshfield and her teacher was Lafayette Tucker, a thirty four year old man from Texas.  Roxie was fourten years old at the time.  Fate, as he was called, decided he wanted to go to Indian Terrirory to live so he asked Roxie's uncle, who had the right to make decisions for her since he was feeding and clothing her, if he could marry her and take her to Indian Territory.  In those days it was considered proper for a 34 year old man to marry a young wife.  So they were married in March 1902 early in the morning and started out in a covered wagon for Indian Territory.  My grandmother knew this man she had married only as Mr. Tucker, her school teacher.  I can imagine how frightened she must have been.  Going to an uncivilized nation with a man she hardly knew and leaving her mother and siblings behind.  The pioneer women of that day were stronger in every way than the women of this day.  The rains had been falling and the river was overflowing when they came to the banks and she said she was so scared and he drove those horses and that wagon off into the swollen river.  The horses took the wagon upright all the way across the river and they continued on their way to Indian Territory.  They settled in Maxwell, Indian Territory. My mother, Margaret Hughes Tucker was born there January 24, 1903.  My grandmother and grandfather lived together thirty six years before he died in 1938 in Chickasha, Oklahoma.
