Men Zora Taylor was born July 24, 1888 to Daniel Jesse Taylor and Mary Moore. She married Samuel Claud Merchant on February 9, 1905 in Lee County, Mississippi. To this union 12 children were born: Allan who died an infant, Hattie Lou, Charlie Wood (Buster), Roy Lee, Minnie Ola, Daniel Bradford, Mary Alice, Maggie Mae, Millie Inez, Sarah Ellen, Ruby and Annie. Men Zora died on February 1, 1968. She is buried at Wofford Cemetery in Lamar County, Alabama. Most of Men Zora and Samuel Claud's children are buried at Wofford as well. Men Zora is my great grandmother, mother of my grandfather Daniel Bradford Merchant.
Final rites for Mrs. Zora Merchant 80, Sulligent, who died Thursday at the Lamar County General Hospital were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Wofford. Rev. Gurley Roberts and Rev. P.C. Jarrell officiated. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery with Brock's Brown Service directing. Mrs. Merchant was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church. Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Mary Alice White and Mrs. Ruby Kell, both of Sulligent, Mrs. Maggie Mae Harris, Gattman, Miss., Mrs. Sarah Harper, Detroit, Mrs. Millie O'Mary and Mrs. Annie Green both of Rock Island, Illinois; three sons, Bradford and Charlie Merchant both of Sulligent and Roy Merchant of Vernon; one sister, Mrs. Bessie Black of Arkansas; one half-sister, Mrs. Wilma White, Birmingham; three brothers, Stonewall Taylor, Alvis Taylor and Wreath Taylor all of Sulligent; 50 grandchildren and 52 great grandchildren.
