Loving Wife & Centenarian
My Beloved Great Aunt
Father: Victor Chalmers Ellis
Mother: Lucy Jane Bost
Married: John Arch Barkley (Born: 04 Sept 1891- Died: 18 Feb 1947)
Siblings: Charlie Ellis (died young in a fire accident), Mary Ellis, Chall Ellis, Jay Lynn Ellis, my grandfather, Harvey Ellis, Fannie Ellis (Plyer), Lester Ellis, Lula Ellis (James), of Lake City, FL, James Ellis, Paul "Bill" Ellis, of Winston-Salem, NC
Career: Seamstresses for Belk Department Store, Statesville, NC (28 years)
Residence: Purchased home on Tadd Street, downtown Statesville, NC, near the Nicholson Funeral Home, in 1947/48. She lived to be over 100. I remember visiting her at her home on Tadd Street, before she moved to a nursing home to be with her sister, Fannie Ellis Plyler
Obituary: Statesville Record & Landmark, page A-3, 1994, January 17
Interment: Oakwood Cemetery, East Broad Street & 114 Oakwood Road, Iredell County
Personal Note: My family had occasions to meet the larger family at family gatherings, but I was young, and doing what kids do. However, I did get to visit with Aunt Sally in her home on Tadd Street, in downtown, Statesville, not far from the family funeral home, Nicholson. Aunt Sally appeared to be a very strong-willed person and content in her life. Her husband John died in 1947, and she lived alone at the time of our visit. Later, her sister, Aunt Fannie Plyler, from Lake City Florida, would come to join her when her husband, Marvin Floyd Plyler, died. When it became more difficult they both went into the same nursing home and became the life of the party. Both lived to be over 100 years old. Good strong genes and an active and happy life.
