Dr Frank M Durham, 58, of 195 Wateree Ave, University of South Carolina English professor and author, died Saturday morning in Columbia Medicenter.

Formerly a professional actor, he was a past diorector oc Columbia Town Theater. He had served as Fulbright lecturer at the University of Adelaide in Australia and in 1961 and 1962, he was a Smith-Mundt lecturer in the University of Saigon in South Vietnam.

A friend of DuBose Heyward, Durham was author of "Dubose Heyward, The Man Who Wrote Porgy." His other books included :Giant from the Wilderness," "The Sullivans Island Edition of Poe's The Gold Bug," "Elmer Rice," and "The Collected Short Stories of Julia Peterkin."

The Columbia native was founder and co-editor of the South Carolina Review, and had published plays, fiction, verse and more in 50 articles in scholarly and critical journals.

Dr Durham received his AB degree from the University of South Carolina and in 1970 he received the Russell Award for the Humanities and Social Sciences. He held an MA degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and a Ph.D from Columbia University.

Dr Durham had held a Rockefeller fellowship in the creative program in the humanities sponsored by Duke University and the University of South Carolina. He recently compiled a volume of essays on Jean Toomer's "Cane."

Dr Durham was a member of American Society for Theater Research, South Atlantic Modern Language Association, Columbia Dramatic Club and Quill Club.

A son of the late Dr Frank M and Virginia Cardwell Durham, he was born in Columbia and was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Funeral services will be Monday at 3 pm in First Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs Kathleen Carter Durham; a son, Frank M Durham of New York; and a sister, Miss Anna Sinton Durham of Columbia.
