Merrit J. Dorsey old Civil War Veteran of Co. F. aged 76 years died April 4th at his home near Devil's Ridge. The burial will be held April 6th at Milford. He is survived by a son Calvin and daughter Mrs. H. F. Humphry of Hope and a son, Walter who lived with him.

Meritt's Death Certificate lists his date of birth as Oct 20 1844 and his father as John Dorsey. See note to the right regarding the various birth dates and locations in the census records.

The spelling of Meritt's name comes from how he signed his name in his Civil War Pension application at the National Archives. Meritt enlisted in Company F, Indiana 35th Infantry Regiment on 19 Feb 1864 and mustered out on 30 Sep 1865 due to a head injury received during the Civil War. If he was born in 1848 as some records suggest, he would have been only 15 when he volunteered. The birth year of 1844 seems more likely. The injury caused him to have epileptic seizures throughout the remainder of his life, unable to perform any manual labor while being cared for by his family.
