Dr. William Albert Ross, Jr., age 89 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Saturday, July 14, 2007, in Capital Region Medical Center.

He was born September 19, 1917, in Rock Hill, S.C., the eldest son of William Albert, Sr. and Beatrice Tucker Ross, both deceased.

He attended public schools in Rock Hill, Winnsboro and received a diploma from Finley High School in Chester, S.C. He graduated cum laude from Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, with a B.S. Degree in Biology and Secondary Education. He was president of his class all four years in college and a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity.

He was principal of a junior high school in Union, S.C. Dr. Ross served three years in the United States Army Air Corps as a surgical Technician in the Medical Corps during World War II. He received his pre-med training at the University of Michigan. In 1953, he graduated from the college of osteopathic physicians and surgeons in Des Moines, Iowa, where he completed his internship.

He practiced medicine in Jefferson City for fifty-three years. Dr. Ross was also the Director of Health Services at Lincoln University in Jefferson City from 1960 until 1982.

Dr. Ross marched in the historic Selma to Montgomery march with Dr. Martin Luther King in 1962. As president of the Jefferson City branch of the NAACP for thirty-five years, Dr. Ross was instrumental in the racial integration of numerous facilities and establishments in the region.

For a number of years, Dr. Ross gave several $500.00 scholarships to Lincoln University students who demonstrated a need for financial assistance. He also created for his family the Ross Memorial Scholarship Foundation, named for his parents Beatrice Tucker Ross and William Albert Ross, Sr., formerly of Winnsboro, S.C.

Dr. Ross was preceded in death by his two brothers, Reverend Paul Lawrence Ross and Julius Mansel Ross, Sr. and one sister, Evelyn Ross Hartzog. He is survived by two sisters, Kathleen Ross Crosby of Charlotte, N.C., and Cecile Ross Stevenson of Pottstown, Pa.; two sisters-in-law, Maude Ford Ross of Winnsboro, S.C., and Eliza Alexander Ross of Charlotte, N.C.; and many nieces, nephews and close friends.

A visitation and a memorial service was held on Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church, Jefferson City, Mo.

Dr. Ross was laid to rest on Thursday, July 19, 2007. Family and friends gathered for a final graveside service and interment with full military honors in Ross Memorial Cemetery in Winnsboro, S.C.

Funeral arrangements were under the joint direction of Freeman Mortuary, Jefferson City, Mo., and Glover Funeral Home, Winnsboro, S.C.
