She was the highly esteemed principal of Girls High School of Sumter High School on Calhoun Street (the subsequent McLaurin Junior High School...named after her). When Dr. S. H. Edmunds died, she came over to the Boys high school campus at Purdy and Haynesworth streets as the new building opened; girls and boys combined there to form Edmunds High School. Sammy Way, the Item, 23 March 2022: "Miss Linnie" McLaurin was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. H. J. McLaurin of Sumter County. She was a native of Wedgefield who later moved to Sumter at an early age and spent her entire life here. "Miss Linnie" had a teaching career which covered 37 years. She was a graduate of the Winthrop Training School in Columbia, and after teaching in Sumter a number of years, McLaurin went to Winthrop College in Rock Hill as a member of its faculty. She returned to Sumter as a teacher and served as principal of the Girls High School. Later she established her own private business school known as the McLaurin Business School, which she set up at her home. The Girls High School was later renamed McLaurin Junior High School in her honor; the Sumter Kiwanis Club initiated this prestigious award. She was survived by her six sisters and one brother.
