--Daughter of John J. Strickland & wife Vi Willson. The family lived in Durham, NC in 1930 and 1940.
--Shirley graduated from Randolph-Macon Women's College in 1945. She received her master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania and her PhD from the University of North Carolina.
--Occupation: Professor of Sociology and Anthropology. She taught a few years at the Women's College of Georgia at Milledgeville, GA and then for the rest of her career taughter at her alma mater, Randolph-Macon. She was active on the faculty there, chairing many committees. She retired in 1986.
