The marker reads: "Indian Mary" an honored native daughter of Josephine County Operated a ferry in the Deep Canyon Country of Rogue River. Her father Umpqua Joe, Chief of the Grave Creeks, prevented a massacre by warning early day miners of an Indian attack" Josephine Co. Historical Society.

Indian Mary park on the banks of the Rogue River, started as an act of Congress. On July 4, 1884, President Grover Cleaveland signed legislation to make the smallest Indian Reservation in the US; to allow Umpqua Joe to keep his land when the reservations were created. His land was passed down to his daughter, Mary. Both Mary and Joe are the subject of a book by Percy Booth, "The Ledgend of Indian Mary and Umpqua Joe".
