Author. Victorian era writer of biographies and classically inspired guidebooks and travelogues of Italy and the Mediterranean world. He had about 31 books published, many running to 2 volumes and his autobiography published in 6 volumes (of over 500 pages each). He died alone the day after receiving the news that a lifelong friend, Mmme Ernest Bunsen, had died.
