BETTENDORF, Iowa - Dale R. Copeland, 85, Bettendorf, formerly of Knoxville, Tenn., and Davenport, Iowa, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.
Services in celebration of his life will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, at St. John's United Methodist Church, 14th and Brady, Davenport, with Revs. George White and Ron Carlson officiating. The family will greet friends from 12:30 p.m. until the service at the church. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, his family asks memorials be made to the Shriners' Hospital for Children or to St. John's United Methodist Church. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting Dale's family with arrangements.
Dale was born in 1925 in Prairie City, Ill., to Vern and Leta Copeland. He served with the U.S. Army during WWII. Following his honorable discharge, he married Rosemary Trask in April 1952 and worked for the railroad in Galesburg before moving to the Quad Cities. Rosemary passed away in 1969. He later married Dee Frye. She passed away in 2004.
Dale worked in sales with several motor freight companies, retiring in 1989 to Knoxville, Tenn. Following Dee's death, Dale moved back to the Quad Cities to be near his family.
He enjoyed wintering in Sarasota, Fla., for years. A lifelong member of United Methodist Church, he was most recently a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Davenport. He was also a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge; a member of the Scottish Rite, Kaaba Shrine and their clown troupe, the Viking Club; and American Legion Post 26, Davenport.
Dale was particularly proud of his four grandsons and their academic, music and athletic activities. He loved watching sports on television, especially the St. Louis Cardinals, and also enjoyed golf and bowling. A man of great faith, Dale was a member of the 49ers Sunday School Class at St. John's, as well as Adult Fellowship. He was a wonderful prayer warrior, always thinking of others first. He loved visiting with people, especially his sisters and friends, and also enjoyed reading, gardening and caring for birds. A highlight for Dale was being able to go on the Honor Flight in November 2010. He was very proud to have served his country.
