Biography by Diana Druback

Anna Hulda Riedel was born in Gettengrun (a section of) Adorf, Saxony, Germany on April 3 or 4, 1874 to Gottlob Eduard Riedel (1833-1915) and Karoline Henriette Strobel (1841-1816). Her parents owned and operated a hotel in the neighboring village of Bad Elster, most likely the Wartburg Hotel. Bad Elster was a spa town for the wealthy and titled nobility. The last Saxonian King Friedrich August III visited Bad Elster often. Hulda and three of her brothers, Eduard, Max, and Paul, all immigrated to the United States. Hulda sailed from Bremen, Germany on the S.S. Aller and arrived in New York on October 4, 1890. On September 12, 1893, Hulda married Albin H. Thomae in New York, New York. He had also emigrated from Adorf, Saxony, Germany. Albin was a musical instrument maker, specifically a violin maker. They lived at 148 E. Houston St. and 374 Bowery alley in Manhattan. Hulda and Albin had seven children, Maud Gertrude Augusta (1893-1978), Albin Henry (1895-1975), Herbert "Clarence" (1896-1939), Roy Harry (Nov. 13, 1897-before 1900), Evangeline Anna (1899-1990), Grace Anna (May 19, 1901-before June 1905),and Charles Edmond (1903-1974). Five of their children were baptized at the German Evangelical Mission located on East Houston near Forsythe in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. In 1898, Hulda and three of her young children (Maude, Albin and Clarence) visited family in Germany. They returned sailing from Bremen on the S.S. Koenigin Luise arriving in New York on June 29, 1898. Her husband Albin died on September 23, 1904 and was buried in the Lutheran Cemetery (currently All Faiths Cemetery) located in Middle Village, Queens County, New York. She was left with five young children to raise. About 1905, Hulda married Charles Armitage Morgan of Brooklyn. He worked in a music store. They had two additional children Janet Hulda "Jesse" Morgan (1907-1973) and Armitage James Morgan (1906-1990). Hulda made two more trips to Germany to visit family in 1926 and 1932. She was a member of the Order of Shepherds of Bethlehem. After a long illness, Hulda died on June 1, 1937 at home at 27 Frank Court, Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn, New York and was interred in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, Grave front right center, Lot 28548, Section 198 on June 5, 1937, in the Morgan family plot.
