He was the son of film star Richard Dix (real name Ernest Carlton Brimmer) and Virginia Claire (Webster) Brimmer. He was the older twin brother of actor Robert Dix. and adopted sister Sara Sue Brimmer. He married Jo Ann Beaman in 1951. They were the parents of Richard Marshall Brimmer. He was killed while working as a logger in a logging truck accident.
