Anchorage resident Herbert O. Anungazuk, 65, died Aug. 24, 2010, at Alaska Native Medical Center. Visitation was at Anchorage Native Assembly, 916 E. 11th Ave., with a service. The Rev. Eldon Hicks officiated. Pallbearers were Glenn, Leehara, Herbert and Raymond Anungazuk. Burial was at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.
Herbert Anungazuk was born July 16, 1945, in Wales, at the west end of the Seward Peninsula, where he was also raised. There he was trained as a hunter by his elders. He graduated from Mt. Edgecumbe High School and then attended Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kan. In 1968, he was drafted into the Army and served honorably for two years in Vietnam. In 1985, Herbert was employed by the National Park Service, Alaska Region. At the time of his death, he had become a well-known and highly respected cultural anthropologist with the Park Service. In 1983, Herbert married Lena Riley. They celebrated 27 years of marriage in 2010. He was an easygoing man and a loving father and husband. He had an enormous circle of friends and was known for helping others. He will be deeply missed.
Herbert is survived by his wife, Lena Anungazuk; by his children, Julia, Glenn, Leehara, Herbert, Nathan, Raymond, Amelia and Emilio; and by seven grandchildren. His surviving siblings are Nellie, Ralph, Kelly, Shirley, Toby, Christine, Metrona, George and Karen. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.
