Ann Harvey was born in the tiny town of St. Anicet in Quebec, Canada. Her parents, Robert Harvey and Isabella McDonald were both of Scottish decent, and the community was largely made up of recent Scottish and Irish immigrants. In 1882, at the age of 23, Ann married William Alseph and moved with him to Amherst, Cherokee, Iowa where they farmed and raised their only child, Mary Isabella. Ann and William retired to a large house in Cherokee and in the mid 1930s, after Anna's son-in-law John Richard lost his shoe store in the great depression, her daughter's family moved in upstairs.
