He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

He and Pte Conrad Lewis were killed by small arms fire while on foot patrol to reassure the local population and gather census information in a small village north of the Nahr-e Bughra Canal in the Nad 'Ali district in Helmand province.

Pte Hendry died three days before his 21st birthday. He was from Norwich and joined the military in May 2008. Originally posted to A Company 3 PARA, his outstanding performance led to a transfer to the prestigious Patrols Platoon. He deployed to Afghanistan in October 2010 as an intelligence specialist. Confident, steadfast and motivated, his consummate professionalism made an impact. Good natured and popular with his comrades, he also enjoyed boxing and football.

Pte Hendry leaves behind his parents, brother Jamie, sister Stacey, other relatives and many friends. His family said he had a heart of gold and his smile lit up every room he walked into.

Funeral with full military honours was held on March 2, 2011 at St Nicholas Church, Dereham, Norfolk.
