His obituary, which appeared in the Crowley Post Signal on 8 May 1994, reads:

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 9 at 10 a.m. in St. Michael Church for Earl A. Sonnier, 68, who died Friday afternoon at his residence. Burial will be held in Woodlawn Cemetery. Officiating for the services will be Father Benoit Drapeau. Visitation will be observed from 2 until 9 p.m. today and on Monday from 8 a.m. until time of services. A rosary will be recited at 7:30 tonight. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Geesey Sonnier of Crowley; four sons, Larry Harmon of Hammond, Jerry Harmon of Crowley, Bryan and Marc Sonnier of Lafayette; two brothers, Vernon and Vincent Sonnier of Lafayette; his step-mother, Maude Gardiner Sonnier of Crowley and five grandchildren. Mr. Sonnier joined the military service as a Naval officer after completing Reserve Officers Training Corps at Tulane University from which he graduated in 1947. Mr. Sonnier was a former employee of the Louisiana State University Agricultural Experiment Station. He retired in 1981, having completed 32 years of service in research on the control of Red Rice and in the production of Pedigreed Seed. Pallbearers named for Mr. Sonnier's services are Roland Faulk, Wayne Faulk, Donnie Stutes, Edmund Leonards, Jeffery Dore and Peter Yadron. Honorary Pallbearers include personnel at the L.S.U. Rice Research Station, lead by Dr. Joe A. Musick, Oren Simon, Bill, Goldsmith, John Jackson, and Dr. Joao Salvaor S. Jardim of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
