He was one of a set of triplets born to Walter and Thelma Kelley Boles. He was a member of St. Theodore's Episcopal Church in Bella Vista.

He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Earl Boles; his mother, Thelma Kelley Boles; his triplet brother, Wayne T. Boles, and triplet sister, Betty Elaine Sparks.

Survivors include his wife, an older brother, 3 daughters, one son, a step daughter and a step son.

John graduated from Terrell High School in Terrell, Texas, John attended the University of Arkansas on a football scholarship. He entered the U.S. Army as a regular Army officer and retired as a lieutenant colonel after 20 years of active duty service. As an infantry officer and Army aviator (helicopter pilot), he served two years in combat in the South Vietnam War. John earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and Soldiers Medal for heroism, 11 Air Medals, one with "V" Device for valor in combat. Four Bronze Stars for valor and meritorious service in combat, two Meritorious Service Medals, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star for Gallantry in Combat Action.

Memorials may be made to the Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Benton County in Bentonville, or to St. Theodore's Episcopal Church, c/o the funeral home. Arrangements are by Benton County Funeral Home in Rogers.
