Maxine Petersen was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on January 16, 1914 to parents Mathias and Mary Ann Warnes Petersen. She had two older siblings: Edward Petersen, born in 1905; and Eva Petersen, born in 1907.

On May 12, 1937 in Lincoln, Maxine married James 'Jim' Henry Anderson. They had one child, James Neal Anderson, born in 1940. Husband Jim died on November 30, 1951.

She then married Raymond E. Orton in Lincoln about 1953. They divorced about 1960. On December 18, 1964 in Lincoln, she married George Edwin Wilcox. They moved to Phoenix, Arizona and lived there until their deaths. George died on March 6, 1982, and Maxine died on February 20, 2004. They are interred in the City of Mesa Cemetery.
