Monton, Theressa I. 94, of Custer, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at Cherry Blossom Manor in Hart. She was born Nov. 4, 1914 in Eden Township, the daughter of the late James William and Mary (Waite) Appleton. Theressa was a gifted student, who was twice promoted above her normal grade level. At the age of 16, she graduated as valedictorian of the Class of 1931 from Scottville High School. Theressa attended Mason County Normal and Central Michigan Teacher's College, and she taught at the Round Lake School, north of Walhalla. Theressa married John Monton April 7, 1934. Shortly after their marriage, they acquired a farm on Wilson Road, south of Custer, where she resided for more than 60 years. Theressa was known for her keen interest in literature, music, gardening, and politics. She placed a high priority on the education of her children, and she was proud of the academic success achieved by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a long-time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Custer, and was a member and former president of the St. Rose Altar Society. Theressa is survived by her daughter, Mary (Roger) Wiersma of Grandville; two sons, James Monton of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Judge Anthony (Kareen) Monton of Pentwater; grandchildren, Robert Wiersma and Joan Shuck both of Hudsonville, Dr. Bradley Monton of Boulder, Colo., Lynne Hasse of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Brian Monton of Ludington; great-grandchildren, Brandon Shuck, Ashley Baumbach, and Lucas Wiersma. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; son, Jack Monton; brothers, Walter William and Robert Harold Appleton; and sister, Geneva Walker. Cremation has taken place and final interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Custer.
