Cpl. Nathan B. Carse, 32, of Harrod, Ohio, died Feb. 8 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 2nd Engineer Battalion, 176th Engineer Brigade, White Sands Missile Range, N.M. Cpl. Carse was born on November 27, 1978, in Lima, to Charles M. and Janis (Hays) Carse. His father preceded him in death, and his mother survives in Harrod. Other survivors include two sisters: Megan (Matthew) Brown of Ada, and Kristin (Sgt. Jacob) Purdy of Mililani, Hawaii; four nephews: Jackson Brown, Aidin Brown, Collin Brown, and Bryce Purdy; his girlfriend, Geri Sanchez of White Sands, New Mexico; his maternal grandmother, Beulah Hays of Ada; five uncles: Bruce (Mindy) Hays of Celina, Donald (Peggy) Hays of West Mansfield, Ohio, Bradley (Debra) Hays of Ada, Rex (Bonnie) Hays of Spencerport, New York, and Richard (Arlene) Carse of New Braunfels, Texas; and numerous cousins. Cpl. Carse was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Ralph Hays, and his paternal grandparents, Richard M. and Lucille D. Carse. Cpl. Carse was a member of the U.S. Army with the 176th Brigade, 2nd Engineers Battallion, 595th Sapper Company, 1st Platoon, where he served as the Team Leader.
He was a graduate of Allen East High School in Lafayette, Ohio, where he loved being active in football, baseball, weight lifting and singing in school musicals. He graduated from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, with a B.A. in Biology/Environmental Science. During this time he was a four-year letterwinner on the Capital football team. He then was employed by Great Lakes Environmental Consultants in Columbus. Moving to Louisiana, he graduated from Louisiana State University with a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering/Environmental Science. Playing rugby became a favorite sport of his at that time. He then worked at All South Engineering Consultants, which involved managing the reconstruction of levies and sewer systems in Louisiana. Fulfilling a long desire to serve his country, he then joined the U.S. Army and was a combat engineer. Cpl. Carse will forever be remembered as a loving son, brother, uncle and friend. Besides sports, he loved hunting, raising animals, dancing and construction projects. His laugh was contagious and was a friend to all. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 18, at Crossroads Church of God, 775 Thayer Road, Lima, with Pastor Jonathon Hanover officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Ada. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 17, at the Crossroads Church of God, Lima.
