Augustus D. "Gus" Baker was the son of Allen Baker and Eunice Tupper. He married Charlotte Ella "Lottie" Durfee on 27 December 1870 in the Town of Ledyard, Cayuga Co., New York. Gus and Lottie resided in the Town of Aurelius where Gus was a farmer and stockman. He served as Treasurer of the New York State Breeders Association at one point in his career. Gus and Lottie had two children: a son, Leroy Augustus Baker, and a daughter, Bertha Lois Baker.

"Death of A. D. Baker. Augustus D. Baker, one of the best known and most prosperous farmers of the town of Aurelius for years, died this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Warren H. Dean, No. 222 Genesee Street, aged 73 years, 4 months and 24 days. The deceased was a descendant of the pioneers of Cayuga County. He received a common school education in the schools of Aurelius and became a prominent and successful farmer and stock raiser of Cayuga County. Mr. Baker took an active interest in the affairs of the county, was a Democrat in politics and had served as justice of the peace for Aurelius. Two children, Mrs. Dean and one son, Leroy A. Baker, survive. The funeral will be held at the First Universalist Church Tuesday at 3:30 o'clock. Prayer will be offered at the home of his daughter at 2 o'clock. Burial will be made in Fort Hill."
