Obituary: 6 Jul 1895 Sat The Auburn Bulletin, Auburn, N. Y.
John W. Haight, one of Auburn's oldest citizens' died shortly before midnight last night (5 Jul). Mr. Haight was one of the pioneers in the jewelry business in Auburn and came here when he was 17 years of age, engaging with Asa Munger at the present location of Mills & Lathrop's shoe store where he did business for 50 years, most of the time at the corner where the the Triangle pharmacy is located, doing general watch and clock repairing etc. Mr. Haight was born in Duchess county but his parents removed to Victory in this county while he was a little boy. He was born April 23, 1815. Shortly after coming to Auburn he joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, and a peculiar coincidence attains in the the fact that he and William J. Moses occupied for years pews adjoining each other in the old church, corner of North and Water Streets, and that they purchased lots in the same enclosures and adjoining at Fort Hill Cemetery. Mr. Haight was for years one of Auburn's leading business men and his good judgement, integrity and honesty gave him many responsible positions which he filled with credit to himself. He was a trustee of the church for years, one of the original trustees of the Cayuga Orphan Asylum and is the last of the first board. For several years he was a member of the Board of Education, and one of the first trustees of the Auburn Savings Bank, a position which he resigned only a short time since on account of ill health. For five years he had been failing, and the cause of his death was old age. Mr. Haight leaves surviving him a widow, three sons; William, Fred and Isaac, and five daughters, Mrs. Richard C. Steel, Julia, Addie, Elizabeth and Helen Haight. Funeral services will be held at his home No. 109 North Street, Monday (8 Jul) at 4 p.m. Interment will be in the family lot on Fort Hill (Cemetery).
