Johanna was the daughter of John Daniel Elias Scharff. She married Julius Fritz Kiemsteadt. She had eight children: Rudolph, Louise, Julius, Martha, Augusta, Bertha, Friedrich and George. She was born in Kowno, Lithuania, which was also at times in Russia. Her family left Bremen, Germany, and arrived in New Orleans in 1880 before making their way to Texas, where she married Julius, a German immigrant. After his death she married Julius Baumgardt in 1903. That marriage ended before 1910. He was cruel to her and her sons had to come get her.
