James enlisted on May 1, 1862 at 2nd Lt. in Raleigh, Mississippi for 1 year. He was elected 1st Lt. on May 14, 1862 and promoted to Captain on April 6, 1864. He was listed as in the hospital at Tyner's Station (near Chattanooga, Tennessee) in August 1862. He had 4 brothers who also served during the war, one of whom (William) died at Tyners' Station on September 25, 1862.
James T. Martin was the son of Joseph Martin and Nancy Stringer and the grandson of John Pigg Martin. The family lived around Taylorsville, Smith County, Mississippi.
