Walter married Rita White and the couple had one daughter. Walter was employed as a foreman for the Downey Heating Co. in the Milwaukee area.
On 13 March 1953, he and a coworker were on a job in Janesville, Wisconsin. In the wee hours of the morning the two were traveling on Hwy 51, just south of Janesville. Walter was a passenger in the vehicle when it was hit by a milk tanker truck. He was killed instantly. He was 41 years old.
