Charles was the grandson of Johann F. Startz who was a citizen of The Republic of Texas; and a "First Founder" of the German Colony/Town of New Braunfels, Texas. Charles Startz is a Son of Texas.

Charles Startz, he wrote "Carl" in the WWI Draft registration, most knew him as "Charley", born April 27, 1888 in Cypress Mill, TX., passed December 8, 1953 on his ranch southwest of San Saba, Texas. It was said that Charley died of cancer, possibly colon or related cancer that had returned after initial treatment in about 1950. Family members including his wife Pope, daughters Cozette and Tessie, cared for Charley during his last days in the old farmhouse. It was said that Charley loved lying on a cot on the front porch where he could see at least part of his farm.

Charley married Winsfred Pope "Poppie" (pronounced Pope-ie) Woods on 12/10/1911 by J. G. Braly, Pastor, San Saba, Texas. Winsfred Pope Woods was born 09/19/1890 in San Saba, died 2/12/1991 Austin, TX.

Charley's faith was strong and based at the New Hope Presbyterian Church. Charley was a good musician and Fiddler. When he was young, Charley and his brother Jeff played for dances on weekends.
