R. Parry Greenwood Jr., age 88, our kind, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend to all, passed away at his home on February 6, 2011 of natural causes incident to age.
Parry was born in Murray, Utah on December 20, 1922 to Ray P. and Arvilla Hansen Greenwood. He graduated from Jordan High School and attended BYU and USU for a short time.
He also worked with his father on the family farm before enlisting in the Army Air Corps. Through the Army Air Corps, he was able to fulfill one of his greatest desires and dreams of becoming a pilot.
As a pilot during World War II, he flew out of England on missions over occupied France. On his sixty-seventh mission, he was shot down over France, where he was hidden by the French underground until General Patton liberated the town he was in. He returned to his unit in England and then later to his home in Sandy, Utah. His love of country was solidified and he never took for granted the freedoms he has enjoyed.
Upon returning to the United States, he sought out the love of his life, Paulene Boyce, and they were married on February 15, 1945 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were blessed with six children, and a later took the opportunity to welcome three native American children into their home, introduced to the family through the church's placement program. Roger, Kathy, and Susie became son and daughters as well as brother and sisters to the family.
Parry pursued several different vocations after the war, but his heart was in the military and his love of flying kept him pursuing a full-time job at the Utah Air National Guard.
He began his employment there and worked for over thirty years with, "some of the greatest people you could ask to work with." He loved his Guard friends, and co-workers and considered them family.
He was the Commander for the 191st Squadron and Group Commander of the 151st Air Refueling group. He retired as a Brigadier General and Assistant Adjutant General for the Utah National Guard.
Parry held many positions in the LDS Church, including Bishop of the Draper First Ward. He served three LDS missions with his beloved wife, as Director of the New York Visitor Center, Mission President of the Rapid City South Dakota Mission, and Director of the Los Angeles Visitor Center. Later, he was called as a Sealer in the Jordan River Temple, where he performed temple sealings for many of his grandchildren. He served many years at the Temple, with his wife and many friends.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Pauline; his children, Nancy Lund, George (Louann), Laurie Gormley (Randy), Ray Paul (Jennifer), and Paula Saxey (Mark); his brothers, Gene (Lila) and Tom; and sisters, Elaine Singleton (Stan) and Mildred Andersen (Richard); twenty-six grandchildren; and fifty-two great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by son, Roger; and son-in-law, Gene Lund.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, February 11, 2011 at 12:00 p.m. in the Draper, Utah Stake Center, 13085 South 300 East, Draper, Utah. Friends and family may call on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Friday from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at this LDS Stake Center location.
Interment and full military honors will be in the Draper Cemetery.
