Nicholas is the son of Nicholas Maccubbin (Find a Grave ID 101160920 and Mary Clare Carroll ID 101161037). When Mary's brother Charles Carroll died, he had no children. He left his estate to Mary's sons, with the stipulation that they change their surname to Carroll. In 1783, court records show that Nicholas and his brother James Henry (ID 14738639) changed their names. Their brother Samuel (ID 14738639) did not change his name.
