Martha was the eighth child of ten children born to John Alleman and Christeana Stentz Alleman. She was born Dec. 1, 1849 at Lake Branch near Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie Co., Iowa. The family had joined the Mormon church and moved around a lot because of persecution towards the church members. The older children were born in Mercersburg, Franklin Co., Pennsylvania; Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois; Florence, Douglas Co., Nebraska.

Martha married Edward Lucian Whiting August 3, 1874 in Salt Lake City, Territory of Deseret.
